Today you will start by visiting the most famous temple of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep. Doi Suthep is not only Chiang Mai's most famous temple, but also one of the most well-known in the whole country. Located on a nearly 1,700-metre-high mountain (named Doi Suthep), the temple offers great views of the distant surroundings. Once you have climbed up the long (snake-decorated) staircase, one of the most charming temples you will ever see awaits you. The heart of the temple is small but has exceptional beauty.
From there on, continue to a Hmong village. The Hmong form the second largest group of hill tribes in Thailand (the Karen the largest). They are divided into several minorities (such as the Blue Hmong and the White Hmong), but all live in Thailand in the hills and mountains of the north. Traditionally, they lived off opium production, but nowadays on rice, maize and coffee. Clothes used to be made of hemp, and although they continue to be, not everyone still wears the traditional shirts, trousers and skirts on a daily basis.
After lunch we visit San Kampaeng, Chiang Mai's most extensive collection of handicrafts and art shops. At last count, over 70 stores and factories were selling silverwork, woodcarvings, lacquer ware, leather products, gems and Thai silk. Together they form one of the largest concentration of handicraft industries in the region. Whether you buy anything or not, visiting these factory work shops is an experience worth the trip. At the end of the afternoon you will be dropped at your hotel in Chiang Mai.
